RaceIndex provides athletes and coaches with an overall triathlon difficulty rating between 0 and 100. A course’s “difficulty” varies dramatically based on its terrain and climate as well as an athlete’s physical profile and performance ability.

Details and methodology are as follows:

Factors considered include each course’s elevation, elevation change, distance, wind speed, wind direction relative to athlete heading, temperature, and humidity, among others. To allow for comparative analysis, TriDot created a fictitious baseline course called RaceZero. RaceZero has the following characteristics:

Racezerobaseline

Location at mean sea level
No Elevation change on the bike or run courses
No wind
Constant temperature of 59º F and 30% humidity
Water temperature of 70º F, Salt Water, and neutral current
TriDot created three fictitious baseline athlete profiles to use as constants for performance analysis including a back-of-the-pack athlete (“Slower Triathlete”), middle-of-the-pack athlete (“Mid-Pack Triathlete”), and a front-of-the-pack athlete (“Elite Triathlete”). TriDot uses its proprietary EnviroNorm™ Technology (“E-Norm”) to simulate race results for these baseline athletes on the RaceZero course as well as actual courses based on expected environmental conditions using actual weather data feeds. The Terrain & Climate sub-index is calculated based on baseline athlete race-simulation variances between the RaceZero course and each IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 course.

A "typical" RaceIndex is provided for each race reflecting its course and average historical weather data for that location and date. A "projected" RaceIndex is also provided in the 14 days leading up to a race reflecting projected weather data using actual weather data feeds.

Athletes can leverage this technology further by training withand planning your race execution with RaceX, a tool included in TriDot subscriptions. TriDot continually adjusts for terrain and climate factors in your training to optimize your improvement and prevent burnout, while RaceX optimizes your race pacing.
